I tried step one. It booted up afterwards for 30 seconds, then went back into to the loop. Now it is stuck in recovery booting. I removed the battery. tried again, and still stuck in recovery booting.

It's because your phone is in android boot loop, which is a common issue. Please try this tutorial to resolve the issue; http://www.samsungsfour.com/tutorials/how-to-resolve-android-boot-loop.html

I followed all your steps not sure what i could have done wrong. Do you have any ideas as to what i may have done wrong?

What r u trying to do please tell me. R u trying to enter recovery mode or to root. If you are trying to enter recovery mode, please release the power button once you see your phone model number on the screen. That is the mistake people normally do. :-)
