This article is about the impact Of COVID-19/Coronavirus on the global Smartphone Industry.
When it all started back in December 2019, we all thought that we are all domed and there will not be any life after this, especially for the Smartphone industry.
Why Smartphone industry?
Simply because it is a luxury than essential. Nobody will opt a Smartphone when he is struggling to meet daily needs.
But what really happened?
Before that lets talk a little bit about the Covid-19 and the aftermath all around the world.
What is COVID-19?
COVID-19 caused by Coronavirus is a highly infectious disease which started as small somewhere in China and spread all around the globe in a very short period of time that made it a pandemic of the modern world with very high impact. However, people who are infected with the COVID-19 virus will experience mild to moderate respiratory illness only and will normally recover without any special medical assistance, but only the healthy ones. Then what about others?…the ones with underlying illness. They may develop complications.
The COVID-19 virus spreads primarily through saliva which is discharged to the air when someone speaks or coughs. So precautions are to be taken like respiratory masks. The N95 masks and the multi layered surgical masks are found very effective in preventing this disease.
Now, lets come to our article’s main objective…
From the above paragraphs we know what is COVID-19, now lets have a look at it’s impact on global Smartphone industry, especially the Samsung Galaxy Android Smartphones.
So,
What is the Impact Of COVID-19 On Smartphone Industry?
Like everyone else I also thought the Smartphone industry is going to die along with the COVID-19, as it spread in masses across the globe in a very short period of time. The lock down has started and all the workplaces are closed in no time, the money was also getting dried out as no one was able to work outside their premises. We all know that no one is going to opt a luxurious Smartphone when he doesn’t have the money for his daily needs. So that was a justifiable concern.
But the opposite happened, at least in developing countries.
Even though the global sales has declined by 20%, for developing countries and “unsaturated” countries it boomed like never before, especially the Galaxy Smartphone sales. Which stands as no:1 in sales preceded by Huawei even during the days of this disastrous pandemic. Please have a look at the below graph to get a better idea.
So what helped the sale boom?
Even though most of the countries have eased the lock downs, schools and colleges are still to open. Most of the classes are “Online”. This fueled Smartphone sales in developing countries who are less privileged to have a laptop or desktop at home. Taking this for advantage companies have started work from home as a new norm.
If we take the case of India, the sales has gone up by 40%, followed by UK which showed 35% more sales.
The countries which are already “Self Sufficient” in Smartphone showed little or “-ve” sales when compared to the previous quarter though.
This is a ray of hope for Smartphone industry even in times of this great distress.
